CAT Vehicle 2015

Sam Taylor researched ways a driverless car can function in stop-and-go traffic with inexpensive technology, such as with the use of low-cost cameras.

Yesenia Velasco worked on developing hybrid predictive controller technology, which helps the vehicle identify obstacles in the environment without compromising velocity.

Lykes Claytor worked on creating a system that increases traffic efficiency of driverless cars with a technique called platooning.

Ryan Summit researched ways a driverless car can function in stop-and-go traffic with inexpensive technology, such as with the use of low-cost cameras.

TUCSON, Arizona -- Visiting undergraduate students, including some who are the first in their families to attend college, experienced hands-on research---and hands-off driving---in a National Science Foundation program at the University of Arizona this summer. They will demonstrate their driverless tech research projects on the UA campus Aug. 11.

Can we route traffic better than traffic lights can, if cars can communicate with one another?

Yegeta Zeleke (University of California, Santa Cruz)
Kennon McKeever (University of Arizona)

What if controlling an autonomous vehicle was as easy as drawing a picture? And what if that picture knew whether it was safe or not?

Ryan Summit (Southeastern Oklahoma State University)
Sam Taylor (University of Illinois)

Some mind-numbing tasks when driving could be automated now. Can we do vehicle following in stop-and-go traffic with just a webcam?

Liz Olson (University of Oregon)
Adam Johnson (Virginia Commonwealth University)

I would like to control my car with my camera phone, please. Can I do it?

Charles Jawny (Nova Southeastern University)
Yesenia Velasco (North Carolina Central University)

Humans switch between different kinds of modes for driving a car: it's time for computers to take the same approach.
