CAT Vehicle 2016 Public Demonstration

WHAT: Visiting college students in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program demo new ways to remotely control the University of Arizona’s Cognitive and Autonomous Test, or CAT, vehicle.

WHEN: August 9, 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

WHERE: University of Arizona parking lot No. 3039, located next to the Electrical and Computer Engineering building by Second Street and North Palm Drive

10 students from across the US will put their ideas and tech to the test as they remotely drive the University of Arizona’s Cognitive and Autonomous Test, or CAT, vehicle.

The students – from institutions such as Seattle University, Monmouth College, Lipscomb University and Western Colorado State University – are participants in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates, or REU, program, which gives students from diverse backgrounds valuable research opportunities at major U.S. universities.

Under guidance from professors and mentors in the department of electrical and computer engineering, the visiting students researched new programming and applications to improve current self-driving car technology.

“Learning to do research translates to success in life, regardless of the path students choose after they graduate. The students we have this summer are incredibly talented. They worked hard to develop new theories for autonomous vehicle and connected vehicle technology,” said UA’s Jonathan Sprinkle, a well-known expert on complex autonomous systems, including driverless car technology, who has hosted the REU program at the University of Arizona since 2013.

The CAT Vehicle demonstration is open to the public, and students will be on-hand to discuss their research and experience with the REU project.
